Poll: White Coats

I've been having THE HARDEST time picking out a ski jacket. I've narrowed it down to a few criteria: North Face, no arm pit zips, 3-in-1 that zips together, and must have white & grey. I found one I love, and the store is holding it for me.. but there's just one issue- it's mostly white with a little grey.

I know, I know, that's what I said I wanted. But I'm starting to wonder how practical white is going to be. How easily will it get dirty? How hard will it be to keep it white??

So.. that's where you all come in.. anyone own a white ski jacket? How do you keep it clean? Are you happy with the white or would you go back & switch if you could?

Thanks in advance for your feedback. I need to decide soon!

I have a long white dressy winter coat and a white puffy vest and I love both of them. They take a little extra care and I have to wash them a little more frequently, but nothing too crazy. I love white coats and would never go back to black!

A white ski jacket is a nuts idea. [and I'm saying this from a friendly place :)]. Think about all of the mud and nasty snow we have throughout spring skiing in New England... a white coat will be impossible to keep clean. I even have a hard time with some of my lighter jackets [the lightest one is a dark grey], so I would completely vote against white. Also, as another friendly comment, Northface = totally overrated. Their stuff is SO expensive and it isn't going to keep you as warm as some other brands. Check out Marmot, or my absolute, no-fail, 100% favorite [and a brand you will ALWAYS be happy with] Cloudveil. Their stuff is priced around the same as Northface, if not a bit more expensive, but it will keep you the warmest you've ever been and will hold up against everything.

Okay, stepping off the soap box now... :)

If you're just going to wear the jacket around the house/town, you could definitely get away with it (and it's super-cute). If you're actually planning to ski and whatnot, I'd avoid white. I made the mistake of buying a light blue ski jacket a few years ago and it's just disgusting - I can't keep it clean. Think about all of the equipment you'd be carrying on it (skis, boots, etc) and then factor in the number of times you'll rub up on the car while getting your gear out. And, the chairlift? Not very clean. Also, I totally support the comment about Marmot and Cloudveil, too - good brands to look into! Good luck!

From a Maine native to a Maine native - my biggest regret in the world was getting a white winter coat. Though it was gorgeous and I loved it in everyway - I ended up ruining it before the winter was over.

Remember the muddy slushy mess on the cars? That doesn't come off the cuffs of white coats - at all. And no matter how much I avoided gettin next to vehichles I still managed to ruin the coat. Plus, not to mention, the coffee, hot chocolate, and pen ink I managed to get all over it.

But! I love the coat you picked out. Even though I like Columbia better than North Face. :-P

I have cream ski PANTS. And the lift drips the grease from the line onto the chairs when it rains or is warmer out ... and it doesn't come off.

So be CAREFUL!

I think white is great. I don't have a white ski jacket but I have a white down vest. It doesn't get that dirty and I can mostly wipe it down if necessary. I don't think you should worry too much about it unless you're planning on doing a lot of winter hiking or something, where you'd be in the midst of trees and other stuff that would dirty it.

Totally depends...if you're going to actually wear it outside for more than running from your car to the store, you might want to think it over.. I had a white jacket and I L.O.V.E.D. it. I would have bolded that loved if I could have! :) It was awesome. But honestly, I had to wash it every week or two weeks and I had to scrub the wrists down ALL the time because driving it got dirty, scraping my windshield it got dirty, shopping etc etc etc. After about 1/2 way through the winter my dad was so sick of me always washing it he bought me another jacket that was dark! lol but i still wore my white one, just to school and home though. Not for any real purpose!

And I agree with the above post, while I heart North Face, I've found that My Marmot vest is way warmer than my old north face ever was and it's lasted a lot longer. But, it's all personal prefrence and I still love North face because it fits so much better on me than some of the other brands. :)

But! I totally love that jacket an I would sooooo wear it! So a part of me is totally voting for you to get it!

Just my opinion and from personal experience - I would not go with a white ski coat ever again! I have such a hard time keeping it clean and then I worry about getting it dirty when I am out. That worry of keeping it clean sometimes is more than the fun I am having!! Just my thoughts!
